And the past tense of lay is laid I laid the book on the table.Bring vs. TakeBring and take both describe transporting something or someone from one place to another, but the correct usage depends on the speakers point of view. Somebody bringssomething to you, but you take it to somewhere else Bring me the mail, then takeyour shoes to your room.Just remember, if the movement is toward you, use bring if the movement is away from you, use take.Ironic vs. CoincidentalA lot of people get this wrong. If you break your leg the day before a ski trip, thats not ironic- its coincidental (and bad luck).Ironic has several meanings, all of which include some type of reversal of what was expected. Verbal irony is when a person says one thing but clearly means another. Situational irony is when a result is the opposite of what was expected.O. Henry was a master of situational irony. In The Gift of the Magi, Jim sells his watch to buy combs for his wifes hair, and she sells her hair to buy a chain for Jims watch. Each character sold something precious to buy a gift for the other, but those gifts were intended for what the othe r person sold. If you drive up to the mountains to ski, and there was more snow back at your house, thats ironic.Imply vs. InferTo imply means to suggest something without saying it outright. To infer means to draw a conclusion from what someone else implies. As a general rule, the speaker/writer implies, and the listener/reader infers.Nauseous vs. NauseatedNauseous has been misused so often that the incorrect usage is accepted in some circles. Still, its important to note the difference. Nauseous means causing nausea nauseated means experiencing nausea.So, if your circle includes ultra-particular grammar sticklers, never say Im nauseous unless you want them to be snickering behind your back.Comprise vs. ComposeThese are two of the most commonly misused words in the English language. Comprise means to include compose means to make up.It all comes down to parts versus the whole. When you use compr ise, you put the whole first A soccer game comprises (includes) two halves. When you use compose, you put the pieces first Fifty states compose (make up) the United States of America.Farther vs. FurtherFarther refers to physical distance, while further describes the degree or extent of an action or situation. As much as you would rather avoid the entire conversation altogether, you’re inevitably going to have to talk about it during your job interview. Ace your interview by learning how to answer these four  tough job interview questions about your layoff. Q: “Why was your job eliminated?” By asking this question, your interviewer is getting right down to business. You can’t just answer an off-handed, “I was laid off from my job” because without a doubt, your interviewer is going to want to know why. So tell him only what he needs to know- and no more. A: “I was laid off from my previous position due to budget cuts. Although I was saddened to leave a position I truly enjoyed for three years, I am proud of all the work I accomplished while working there.” Q: “How many other people were laid off with you?” In this question, the recruiter might be trying to figure out if you were let go with a bunch of other employees- or if it was just you. If it was only you, he might assume that your layoff was more performance-based than due to financial reasons. A: “I was let go along with four other people from my department. Even though my boss fought to keep us, ultimately the company needed to decrease the amount of full-time salaried staffers, and we were not able to be kept on.” If you were the only one laid off, you can answer the question like this: A: “I was the only person let go this time, but there have been other layoffs in the previous months. Hiring managers are interested in understanding if you’ve maintained your professional activity level since your layoff (and not been under the covers binge watching your favorite shows). So talk about what you’ve been doing since your layoff. A: “I’ve kept very busy since being laid off. I’ve: Volunteered Attended classes Earned X new skill Gone on informational interviews Freelanced or had contract work Helped at my child’s school Any one of these answers can show that you’ve persevered, despite your layoff. They can count in your favor when a hiring manager or employer is determining how resilient you are after a layoff. Q: “What would your former boss say about you?” Again, a new employer might be trying to figure out if your layoff was something in or out of your ex-boss’ control. Reassure your interviewer that your layoff was due to no fault of your own. A: “In my previous position, I received stellar performance reviews and got along well with my boss and colleagues. Although I was disappointed with the layoff, I know that it was out of my boss’ hands. Ronald Reagan While most of us know Ronald Reagan from his time as president, he was also a fairly successful actor earlier in his life. He even served as president of the Screen Actors Guild. Reagan was 55 years old when he was elected to his first political office, becoming the Governor of California in 1966. Being the spokesman for General Electric, as well as an actor, might not seem like surefire ingredients for a two-term president, but it worked quite well in his case. Jack Cover Probably the least recognizable name on this list is Jack Cover. While his name might not jump out at you, chances are you know about his invention, the Taser. The early years of Covers life are impressive; he was a nuclear physicist and worked in the fields of defense and aerospace, even helping his agency become one of the major contributors to NASAs Apollo space program. While Cover was busy in his early avionics career, he followed the news closely. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO GO, and now YouTube. Even SnapChat is getting into the original content streaming game with a new true crime series (though I am holding out for a War Peace adaptation featuring rainbow puke.) Now it is one thing to take the occasional weekend afternoon to binge a show (especially if a season premiere is coming or the weather is bad) but who is staying up until the wee hours of the morning and going into work super tired because they were streaming in bed? Tuck.com, a sleep data company, looked into it by surveying over 1,300 Americans to find out the ins and outs of streaming in bed.Believe it or not  nearly half (45%) of adults  have pulled an all-nighter in the last year to watch a TV show, with  men  being slightly more likely to do so than women (47% vs. 43%). The  guiltiest age group  is 25-34-year-olds, of whom just under 50% have stayed up all night to watch TV. However,  all adults aged 54 and under  are about equally willing to pull an all-nighter for streaming content.  Older adults aged 55 and above  appear to care more about sleep, with only about a quarter of that demographic giving up sleep for TV.See many people view binging as an actual sleep-aid. They keep it on as background noise as they drift off to sleep. However, this is not a good sleep.  A 2017 study published in the  Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine  found that  one-third  of binge-viewers experience poor sleep. Likewise,  35.72%  of our survey respondents felt that having access to streaming content contributed to them not getting enough sleep. Also have you ever fallen asleep to an episode of Westworld? A case interview is a job interview that includes questions about how to handle specific job scenario. During a case interview, the interviewee is given a business situation and asked what he or she would do to manage the situation. The business scenario is usually one that the interviewee would likely encounter while working for the company. However, the interviewer may also ask interview questions or ask you to solve  brain teasers that don’t relate directly to the company. These types of questions may leave you feeling a bit flustered, so take a deep breath and think your way through them. When Employers Use Case Interviews Used most often in  management consulting  and  investment banking interviews, case interviews allow interviewees to demonstrate their  analytical ability  and  problem-solving  skills. Most case interview questions do not have one right answer â€" there may be more than one acceptable way to manage the situation. For example, you may be asked how to determine how big the market might be for a new type of tennis ball. That’s not much information so you’d need to ask questions such as who the target consumer is â€" professional tennis players or weekend tennis enthusiasts. Another question might be about how much the new tennis balls cost and how or where they are sold â€" in stores or online. You could explain how you’d calculate the potential size of the market for this new tennis ball. In addition, perhaps you could offer ideas for expanding to additional consumers such as high school or college tennis players. The case interview doesn’t have to be verbal only. You can draw up a few graphs, charts, or illustrations to help get your point across to the interviewer. One way to do this is to use an Issue Tree to outline and solve the problem. Remember that answering a case interview question like this really isn’t about being right or wrong - the interviewer is more interested in how the applicant arrives at his or her solution. As such, a case interview is back and forth dialog. The interviewee is expected to interact with the interviewer and ask clarifying questions in a logical, sequential order to solve the given problem. Tips for Answering Case Interview Questions Your case interview may be less stressful if you have an idea of what’s going to happen. Here are some tips for handling case interview questions: Understand the question. Paraphrase the question before answering to make sure you understand the problem. If you’re not clear on the question be sure to ask for more information. Be prepared to take notes. Most companies allow interviewees to take notes during the interview; if so, you should be prepared. Bring lined paper to the interview for notes and bring some graph paper as well, in case you need to draw any charts. There’s no need to rush. Take your time answering each question; logically think through the problem before arriving at a solution. Ask questions. Case interviews are interactive; feel comfortable asking your interviewer clarifying questions to gain more information. In fact, your interviewer will expect you to ask questions. Always explain how you arrived at a solution, even if you are simply estimating a number. Remember that how you arrived at your answer is generally more important than the answer itself. Stay professional. Although this is different from a traditional interview, it’s not the time to act too casually. Remain as professional as you would during a regular interview. Sit up straight, speak clearly, and make eye contact with the interviewer. Have fun! Interviewers want to see that you are enthusiastic about solving business problems. After all, these are the types of situations you will manage every day if you’re hired. Case Interview Practice It’s very important to  practice for a case interview, especially if this is your first one. Many universities and companies offer sample case questions on their website. Hunt for some of these case interview samples and use them to prepare yourself. Practice answering case interview questions in front of friends, family, or a career counselor. If you’re lucky, maybe you know someone who has experience with these types of interviews and is knowledgeable about your field. He or she might be able to help you create a mock interview. It’s also a good idea to grab a stopwatch and time yourself. Most case interviews last 15 to 30 minutes. That may seem like a long time if you’re not ready, so whether you practice with another person, or just speak out loud in front of the mirror, the more you prepare now, the more comfortable you’ll be at the real interview.

You send in an application, and you hear back from the employer right away with a request for an interview. You go in for your  first interview, which you ace, followed by a few more, which also go well. A week later, the phone rings. You  got the job. You show up to work on your first day, eager to make a good impression. It goes well, but its not exactly what you thought it would be. Maybe tomorrow will be different, you tell yourself. You show up on day two, but its not. Neither is day three nor the rest of the week. Doubt creeps in. Should I have taken this job? Is this where I belong? Can I make the kind of impact I want to make here? you wonder to yourself. What to Do When Youre Not Satisfied at Work I work with people at all stages of their careers, including those who have started new jobs and are now questioning if the roles are right for them. When people are not sure about their employment situation, I usually offer them the following three choices: 1. Quit Complaining and Just Do the Job! This is not my favorite option, but it is an option.  When we spend all our time complaining about how much we dislike something, we may be expending energy we could put toward appreciating that things good qualities. Surely not everything is bad about this position you have taken. After all, there was a reason you were initially interested in it. Jot down a list of pros and cons.  You might be surprised to  actually find you like some  things about this job you think you completely hate. Maybe there is enough here to keep you engaged and productive for at least a bit longer, or maybe there is even enough that the job can become your career. 2. Do  What You Can to Improve the Job or Environment Your Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) preferences might offer some insight here: A. Extraversion If you prefer extraversion, you are likely energized by work environments where you can interact with others. Not having opportunities  to talk things out with others could leave you feeling drained by the end of a day. Tip: Try volunteering for a few projects that will allow for more interaction with  your colleagues  on a regular basis. Join or establish groups that offer opportunities to  discuss ideas with others. B. Introversion If you prefer introversion, you likely enjoy work environments that provide some private space and reflection time. Having to constantly talk to  other people  throughout the day could leave you feeling exhausted and even a little testy at times. Tip: If your new job requires you to interact with others more than you would like, try getting up a littler earlier in the morning to get the time you need to process the coming day.  Use your  lunch break  for a solitary walk or drive.  If you need more reflection time, ask for it. You might be surprised by how supportive your colleagues and superiors are. C. Sensing If you prefer sensing, you probably like to get information in a sequential, step-by-step way when starting a new job. If you arent getting this kind of information, you may feel that too many of your questions are going unanswered. Tip: Dedicate time during your day to asking subject-matter experts for the specifics you need. Research resources to find answers that can help fill in the blanks. If no guidelines or manuals exists, be that person who volunteers to put them together. Note: Be careful not to step on anyone toes. You dont want to make people think you are looking down on their established processes. D. Intuition If you prefer intuition, you probably like to receive information in a big-picture-oriented way, instead of getting lots of details, when starting a new job. If you arent getting this kind of information, you may feel you dont have enough of a sense of general purpose to get things started. Tip: When all those details come at you at once, take a deep breath and put them into manageable chunks or patterns. These patterns can help you see what the ultimate outcome of your efforts could be, which should help you get started. E. Thinking If you prefer thinking, you likely need to address task-focused objective logic when making decisions in your new job. If your workplaces culture considers this approach too impersonal, you may feel as if  you  are being  sidetracked from the most important tasks at hand. Tip: Stay focused on the logical outcomes while also considering that you need people to make things happen. You may want to set up calendar  alerts to remind yourself to acknowledge the feelings and values of others. F. Feeling If you prefer feeling, you likely need to focus on values-centered people issues when making decisions in your new job. If your work environment doesnt appreciate the impact of decisions on people, you may feel you have chosen a  workplace that does not value what is especially important to you. Tip: Remember to stay true to your values first and foremost while always recognizing that work is work and requires outcomes that produce results. G. Judging If you prefer judging, you probably need plans and schedules that you and others respect and follow when organizing work tasks. If your new work environment does not allow for this, you might start to feel anxious, worrying that projects wont  be done on time. Tip: Ask yourself, Do I really need to get it done early, or can it wait just a bit? At the same time, also show clear evidence that the plans you have are realistic and will produce the best outcomes. H. Perceiving If you prefer perceiving, you probably need the flexibility to keep options open when organizing work tasks. If your new work environment does not allow for this, you might start to feel boxed in and pressured to make decisions you are not yet ready to  make. Tip: The proof is in the pudding. If you can prove that your pressure-prompted approach can still result in excellent work that is always on time, those in your new work environment may be more willing to accept it. Still, most organizations run on judging principles, so you will probably need to think about flexing more than you might like. Reward yourself for flexing by making sure to keep your downtime more open-ended. 3. Leave! Really - just leave. Move on to find work you truly love in an environment that honors you for being the person you are.  People often stay in work environments that dont appreciate what they contribute. This can lead to lower engagement, worse performance, and even lower self-esteem. We spend so much time at our jobs - why not find a place that appreciates our contributions the way we naturally present them? - I hope this article gives you a few ideas to consider if you find yourself questioning whether  a new job is really right for you.  I wish you all the best in your journey to find  a work environment that honors and celebrates you for the work you do and the person you are. You extend your hand to meet a contact, excited about the possibilities associated with this new person- - and get a weak, listless handshake.  Even if only for a split second, your attention shifts  to the handshake and not the person behind it. A resume  at its core is a document that lists your education and work experience. However, its also the equivalent of a strong handshake: In this age of applicant tracking systems, overwhelmed hiring managers, and hundreds of applications per position, its vital that your resume create a great first impression. So just what IS a resume in 2015? Lets start with what a resume isnt. A  LinkedIn profile  is now a necessary tool for any job seeker.  As Alexandra Samuel of the Harvard Business Review puts it, a solid LinkedIn profile includes not only your self-proclaimed qualifications, but testimonials from colleagues, clients, and employers. Its easy to update, detailed, and shows off  past work.  Yet you still, as we believe and Forbes agrees, need a good resume in addition to your LinkedIn profile. If a resume is a handshake, a CV (curriculum vitae) is a full dating profile. This document is often used in applying for jobs internationally  or in academia. Rather than focusing on specific employers and job titles, a CV details your professional and/or academic accomplishments and provides a venue for describing research endeavors, awards, and other notable details. Job seekers in the United States should definitely use a comprehensive career management document  for their own records, but skip the storytelling seen in a CV (unless a CV is specifically called for). With that cleared up, lets examine what a resume really is: a set of opportunities. A well-written resume gives you the opportunity to: 1. Showcase crucial keywords. Including the correct  keywords in your resume is the most important part of todays job search. Keywording not only serves the purpose of getting that  resume past an applicant tracking system (ATS), but also helps show your attention to detail.
