Work gets on top of us, we havent spent any quality time with friends or family in what seems like FOREVER and we are sick to death of cold, cloudy weather. When this feeling hits, most of us head straight to the nearest and cheapest beach resort with the hope of unwinding and catching a few rays while were at it. But as the saying goes, if youre going to do something, you might as well do it right. If beach getaway is what youre after, theres definitely no better place than St Lucia. Sure, this tiny island may look like a tiny speck in the huge Caribbean sea to some. But it is actually a gem full of natural wonders, vibrant culture, and a relaxed way of life. Still not convinced? Here are just some of the reasons why there is no better place than St Lucia to have fun and recharge your batteries. They know how to throw a good party Of course, when some of us think of relaxation, we picture a peaceful spa or maybe a relaxing yoga session in a beautiful garden. But you can relax in other ways too, which maybe are a bit more lively! Letting your hair down in St Lucia is a great way to blow off some steam, something most of us need to do when we have been working hard for long periods of time. The local people of St Lucia are incredibly welcoming and their super-positive vibe is sure to rub off on you within only a few hours of being there. Every Friday there are street parties in the main town and feature the best of local music, drinks, and cuisine. Once thats tired you out, youll need a good place to rest your head, so make use of one of the exceptional villas available for rent afterward. The views are unrivaled St Lucia boasts one of the most diverse landscapes in the Caribbean, with the dramatic Piton mountains rising above the southwest coast, and a layer of rainforest lying over most of the island. Take a guided hike to explore some of the natural world at its most impressive. Or, you can go by road, as St Lucias main highway travels around the island in a complete circuit. Make sure you stop off at some of the quaint fishing villages and some of the old plantations too. Its somewhere you can truly relax In terms of vacation weather, St Lucia is generally a pretty safe bet. Due to it being situated so close to the equator, it doesnt really experience four seasons like the rest of the world does. Instead, you should find it pleasantly sunny and warm at all times meaning you have the perfect environment to relax on one of the white sandy beaches with a good book. Personal Branding Interview Marshall Goldsmith - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke with Marshall Goldsmith, whose been featured on this blog before and in the current issue of Personal Branding Magazine.   Marshall is a huge advocate for personal branding, as hes spent his career building the brands of Fortune 500 CEOs.   His latest book is called Succession: Are you Ready and in this interview, he gives us a advice for figuring out who should take your place when you leave. How should a CEO setup his or her succession plan?   What leadership characteristics should they look for? The leadership characteristics of the new CEO should fit the projected needs of the organization in the future â€" not the needs of the past.   Current CEOs should try to avoid the trap of selecting candidates who remind them of themselves! If you were to select someone to succeed you (if you were a CEO), who would it be and why? I am not a CEO, so it is hard to say.   If I were to select someone to replace me as an executive coach, teacher and writer, I would select someone who loved the work, was very future focused, had a mind of his/her own and was willing to learn and change. What happens when you select the wrong person to replace you before you leave your organization?   What are the top 3 disasters that can happen? When you stick with a bad choice, just because you selected the person.   Better to ‘swallow your pride’ and move to another candidate. When the candidate is great at self-promotion â€" but is really not that interested in the long-term success of the company.   I have seen this happen too much. When the world changes and the right candidate suddenly becomes the wrong candidate â€" possibly through no fault of his/her own. Can you give one example of a succession plan that has been successful in the past couple of decades? I will give you two: Frances Hesselbein leaving the Girl Scouts of the USA.   She made the announcement long in advance, left while people still wanted her to stay and ‘got out of the way’ gracefully. Harvey Golub leaving American Express.   He actually left before he was supposed to â€" to ensure that the right person would not leave and would take the job. What types of people become CEOs?   Is it usually the CFO?   CMO? This depends upon the company and industry. In most cases the CEO comes from the core business of the company.   Technical people lead high-tech companies, marketing people lead marketing companies and financial people lead finance companies.   However, this is not always the case.   There are many positive examples where great CEOs have come from outside the core discipline of the company. - Marshall Goldsmith is a world authority in helping successful leaders get even better â€" by achieving positive, lasting change in behavior: for themselves, their people and their teams.   His latest book is called Succession: Are You Ready? and his previous book was called What Got You Here Won’t Get You There is a New York Times best seller, Wall Street Journal #1 business book and winner of the Harold Longman award for Best Business Book of the Year.   It has been translated into 23 languages and is a listed best seller in six different countries.   The American Management Association named Dr. Goldsmith as one of 50 great thinkers and leaders who have influenced the field of management over the past 80 years.     He teaches executive education at Dartmouth’s Tuck School and frequently speaks at leading business schools.
