These professions attract the highest number of psychopaths
These professions attract the highest number of psychopathsThese professions attract the highest number of psychopathsPsychopaths are difficult to spot most of the time. Theyre not the Jack the Ripper caricatures you see in films or read about in books. Often, psychopaths appear normal, which makes them hard to identify. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disbestellungs, or DSM-5, someone with a psychopathic personality schrift is defined as having an inflated, grandiose sense of themself, and a knack for manipulating other people. But a diagnosis is rarely simple. One thing psychopaths tend to have in common is the careers they go for. For example, youre likely to find a lot of them in leadership positions because of their ruthlessness, charisma, and fearlessness. Theyre very good at making snap decisions, but not so good at the empathetic professions like nursing or therapy.Kevin Dutton, a British psychologist and writer, specializes in the study of psychopathy. In hi s book The Wisdom of Psychopaths What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us About Success, he made a list of the types of jobs that attract the most psychopaths.Functional psychopaths, as Dutton calls them, use their detached, unflinching, and charismatic personalities to succeed in mainstream society. In other words, psychopaths often live as normal people with a few traits that make them different.Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.Scroll down to see what the Top 10 career choices for psychopaths are, ranked in ascending order by popularity.10. Civil servantBeing a civil servant is the 10th most popular career choice for psychopaths, according to Dutton. In fact, in 2014, UK Government officials considered recruiting psychopaths specifically to keep order, because they are very good in crises and have no feelings for others, nor moral code, and tend to be very intellig ent and logical.9. ChefMost psychopaths have no interest in harming others, so dont worry about the fact chefs have access to open flames and knives during their workday. Psychopaths thrive in chaos where other people may fail, which could be one reason they work so well in a hectic kitchen.8. Clergy personIn a blog post for Psychology Today, FBI veteran Joe Navarro explains some of the reasons psychopathic people may go for a career in the Clergy. Among them are the fact religious organizations may provide a means for people to exploit others, while also giving legitimacy to their actions. Also, it is easy to make alliances, which can give manipulative people the upper hand in gaining access to sensitive information.7. Police officerPsychopaths dont necessarily have ulterior motives. One of their traits is being very cool-headed under stress. Police officers have a highly intense and dangerous job, so its a huge benefit if you are calm in a crisis. This could be a reason law enforc ement is a popular career choice for psychopaths.6. JournalistDutton lists some of the traits of psychopaths as charm, focus, mindfulness, ruthlessness, and action - which are all advantageous in journalism, especially when you have strict deadlines and you have to get answers from sources.5. SurgeonOne study, published in the journal The Bulletin of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, sought to find out whether surgeons really were likely to be psychopaths. Results showed that consultants at teaching hospitals scored higher on a scale of psychopathic personality than district general hospital consultants, who scored higher than the general population. Possible reasons the authors give in their discussion is that stress immunity is the overriding personality trait of doctors, and the fact surgeons have to make quick, difficult decisions every day.4. SalespersonA psychopathic person who works in schlussverkauf probably shows traits such as shameless self-promotion, stealing ot her peoples contacts, a relentless desire to earn the most money, and an inability to be a team player. Depending on how your organization works, this could either be your worst nightmare, or the dream sales candidate.3. Media person in TV or radioSome psychopaths also exhibit narcissism, which is arguably useful in a job that requires a lot of public focus. The popularity of this career choice for psychopaths could also be because being a TV anchor or radio personality also requires you to be calm in the face of pressure.2. LawyerIn Confessions of a Sociopath A Life Spent Hiding In Plain Sight, author M. E. Thomas, a self-proclaimed sociopath, claims being a sociopath helped her be a better attorney. In a blog post for Psychology Today, attorney Ruth Lee Johnson says that although psychopathic traits like self-confidence, cold-heartedness, and deceitful charm may be handy for lawyers, its simplistic to say these traits alone are enough. In the right context, though, they could make someone very formidable.1. CEOPsychopaths have something called a resilience to chaos. This doesnt just mean they keep a cool head under stress - they also sometimes create havoc for everyone else, because it makes them look good when everyone around them is struggling. Some psychopaths may use this method to climb the career ladder all the way to the top. Others arent necessarily as manipulative and reach the top through their skills alone. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

How to Repair a Work Relationship After You Snap - The Muse
How to Repair a Work Relationship After You Snap - The MuseHow to Repair a Work Relationship After You Snap Your value to your team cant be understated- and everyone knows it. But sometimes youre so focused on the task at hand that it leads you to snap at one of your colleagues. And rather than inspiring everyone to make that final push to the finish line, it brings the groups process to a screeching halt. Of course, youre probably smart enough to know that you need to fix the situation. But a half-hearted apology probably wont cut it after you lash out. Instead, here are a few painful (but necessary) steps to repair the relationship. 1. Take a Minute to VentIve lost count of the number of times Ive suggested venting after youve addressed a few other things. Its usually the font of activity thats best to save until after youve given yourself a few minutes to digest whats just happened. But, in the immediate aftermath of yelling at one of your colleagues, Ive found that its a much bet ter idea to get it all out before you approach that person again. Think of this as that email you write to a person whos driving you nuts and making your life miserable. As you probably know if youve done that, once you see it all in writing, you realize its kind of mean and end up leaving it in your draft folder. Take a few moments to write a letter to your colleague (but make sure youre writing it in a distribution policy thatll never be seen). When you see everything spelled out, youll likely realize that many of those things dont need to be repeated- and that perhaps you overreacted. And because now have that clarity, youll have a much easier time taking the next steps.2. Own the Mistakes You MadeEven though youre convinced that youre right more often than not, its important to think deeply about how you mightve contributed to what just went down. After all, even if your colleague escalated the situation, it usually takes two to tango. So, before you talk to that person again, j ot down two or three possible ways that you made the sitaution more heated- and then set up a meeting with that person so you can acknowledge those things. Its never fun to admit your mistakes, especially when you know that you were just trying to move a project forward. However, saying that youre sorry (and really meaning it) shows everyone on your team that you have some serious leadership potential. If apologizing isnt your forte, make it easier on yourself by using one of these apology templates. Youll be surprised by how productive a conversation can be when youre the first to say youre sorry.3. Let Your Teammate Tell You How They Feel- and Actually ListenAfter you let your teammate know how you feel you let them down, quickly pivot and stop talking. Even the most sincere apology can fall flat if youre dominating the conversation. It can make the other person feel as if youre trying to end the meeting on your terms, without much of a care about how the experience welches for th em. Yes, its noble that youve taken the step to say, Sorry for that terrible thing I did to you. But that apology will resonate so much more if you also shut your mouth and listen to that other person tell you how your harsh words made them feel. You might not leave as best friends, but youll both have a better understanding of what you were trying to achieve when you snapped. It would be so much easier if you went about your life and pretended that you never yelled at your teammate. But even as time passes, people dont forget the times you were difficult to work with, especially if you didnt clear the air afterwards. You might be in for some uncomfortable conversations, but ultimately, youll learn a lot about yourself in the process- and youll gain valuable experience in managing the tricky landscape of working closely with other people.

Can An Employee Bounce Back From a Demotion
Can An Employee Bounce Back From a Demotion In the current career ladder style of career progression, the only way is up, but unfortunately, there isnt a mandatory parachute provided, and often the only way down is to take a crashing fall or at the very least an undignified demotion. This can mean that demoted employees can feel demoralized, disengaged and dispossessed which can lead to further under-performance and a heavy dismissal at some point in the future. This seems to be a waste of good talent, which could be considered a crime in the current talent-starved climate. But, it doesnt have to be this way as employees can indeed bounce back from a demotion, but it takes effort and commitment from both the employee and employer to make it happen.Lets begin with what employees can do to help themselves bounce back from a demotion. For starters, face up to what has happened, and dont catastrophize. Take stock of where you were and where you are now in terms of salary, duties and responsibilities, and remember you may have the opportunity to progress again. The door is closed for now but elend for ever. Most successful people have one or mora failed projects on their resume, theres even a book written on this very phenomenon which was reviewed in this Forbes article, Why The road To Success is Paved With Failure.Second, accept whats happened and grieve for your loss but dont dwell on it. Draw a line in the sand. That was yesterday and this is today and time to move onward and upward. Think, you are now back down at the level where you were once a higher performer (or else you wouldnt have been promoted), and you can soon start performing well again and repair/remember your sense of value and worth. Then look forward. The door to your future career has been closed but not locked and you can still progress again in the future. But, you should learn lessons from your failure. Afte r the dust has settled, talk to your boss and find out why you were demoted and what were your weak and strong areas. Looking forward, you should ideally consider roles which play to your strengths give you a much greater chance of success. Alternately, you can look to develop your weak areas and gain more experience so you are better prepared to step up to the role for a future date. You still have much to aspire to, even after a demotion. As for what the employer or manager can do, you can help demoted employees along this journey with several key interventions. You could consider providing them with a bridging/transitional salary to help offset the gap between their old and new lower salary.Reiterate that the doors to progression are still open to them although they may need to develop more skills first or choose pathways more suited to their strengths. Give them advice and career support in developing areas of weakness and identifying future roles that may play more to their stren gths.Recognize their value in their new role, both personally and privately and remind them and peers of the success they once had at the organization. Show the demoted employee and the wider organization that you are behind them.Give them meaningful work and clear goalsto show them that they are a valued contributor to the organization. This should help to restore their sense of self worth. Also provide some projects where they can make some quick wins asstudies showthat this will boost confidence and performance. So, with both the employee and employer committed to the cause, a failed employee can bounce back from a demotion.

Words 20 misused words that make smart people look dumb
Words 20 misused words that make smart people look dumbWords 20 misused words that make smart people look dumbWere all tempted to use words that were not too familiar with.If this were the only problem, I wouldnt have much to write about. Thats because were cautious with words were unsure of, and, thus, they dont create much of an issue for us.Its the words that we think were using correctly that wreak the most havoc.Looking for an inspiring way to start your day? Sign up forMorning MotivationIts our friendly facebook inc robot that will send you a quick note every weekday morning to help you start strong. Sign up here by clicking Get StartedWe throw them around in meetings, e-mails and important documents (such as resumes and client reports), and they land, like fingernails across a chalkboard, on everyone who has to hear or read them. Were all guilty of this from time to time, myself included. When I write, I hire an editor who is an expert in grammar to review my articles before I p ost them online. Its bad enough to have a roomful of people witness your blunder and something else entirely to stumble in front of 100,000Point is, we can all benefit from opportunities to sharpen the saw and minimize our mistakes.Often, its the words we perceive as being mora correct or sophisticated that dont really mean what we think they do. There are 20such words that have a tendency to make even really smart people stumble.Have a look to see which of these commonly confused words throw you off.Accept vs. ExceptThese two words sound similar but have very different meanings. Accept means to receive something willingly His mom accepted his explanation or She acceptedthe schadstoff graciously.Except signifies exclusion I can attend every meeting except the one next week.To help you remember, note that both except and exclusion begin with ex.Affect vs. EffectTo make these words even more confusing than they already are, both can be used as either a noun or a verb.Lets start with t he verbs. Affect means to influence something or someone effectmeans to accomplish something. Your job welches affected by the organizational restructuring but These changes will be effected on Monday. As a noun, an effect is the result of something The sunny weather had a huge effecton sales. Its almost always the right choice because the noun affect refers to an emotional state and is rarely used outside of psychological circles The patients affectwas flat.Lie vs. LayWere all pretty clear on the lie that means an untruth. Its the other usage that trips us up. Lie also means to recline Why dont you lie down and rest? Lay requires an object Lay the book on the table. Lie is something you can do by yourself, but you need an object to lay.Its more confusing in the past tense. The past tense of lie is- you guessed it- lay I lay down for an hour last night. And the past tense of lay is laid I laid the book on the table.Bring vs. TakeBring and take both describe transporting something or someone from one place to another, but the correct usage depends on the speakers point of view. Somebody bringssomething to you, but you take it to somewhere else Bring me the mail, then takeyour shoes to your room.Just remember, if the movement is toward you, use bring if the movement is away from you, use take.Ironic vs. CoincidentalA lot of people get this wrong. If you break your leg the day before a ski trip, thats not ironic- its coincidental (and bad luck).Ironic has several meanings, all of which include some type of reversal of what was expected. Verbal irony is when a person says one thing but clearly means another. Situational irony is when a result is the opposite of what was expected.O. Henry was a master of situational irony. In The Gift of the Magi, Jim sells his watch to buy combs for his wifes hair, and she sells her hair to buy a chain for Jims watch. Each character sold something precious to buy a gift for the other, but those gifts were intended for what the othe r person sold. That is true irony. If you break your leg the day before a ski trip, thats coincidental. If you drive up to the mountains to ski, and there was more snow back at your house, thats ironic.Imply vs. InferTo imply means to suggest something without saying it outright. To infer means to draw a conclusion from what someone else implies. As a general rule, the speaker/writer implies, and the listener/reader infers.Nauseous vs. NauseatedNauseous has been misused so often that the incorrect usage is accepted in some circles. Still, its important to note the difference. Nauseous means causing nausea nauseated means experiencing nausea. So, if your circle includes ultra-particular grammar sticklers, never say Im nauseous unless you want them to be snickering behind your back.Comprise vs. ComposeThese are two of the most commonly misused words in the English language. Comprise means to include compose means to make up.It all comes down to parts versus the whole. When you use compr ise, you put the whole first A soccer game comprises (includes) two halves. When you use compose, you put the pieces first Fifty states compose (make up) the United States of America.Farther vs. FurtherFarther refers to physical distance, while further describes the degree or extent of an action or situation. I cant run any farther, but I have nothing further to say.If you can substitute more or additional, use further.Fewer vs. LessUse fewer when youre referring to separate items that can be counted use less when referring to a whole You have fewer dollars, but less money.Bringing it all togetherEnglish grammar can be tricky, and, a lot of times, the words that sound right are actually wrong. With words such as those listed above, you just have to memorize the rules so that when you are about to use them, youll catch yourself in the act and know for certain that youve written or said the right one.Travis Bradberry is the co-author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and the co-founder of TalentSmart. This post originally appeared on LinkedIn.

Answering 4 Tough Job Interview Questions About Your Layoff
Answering 4 Tough Job Interview Questions About Your Layoff Answering 4 Tough Job Interview Questions About Your Layoff Job interviews are tough enough as it is, but when youâre coming off of a layoff, you can feel even more stressed out. As much as you would rather avoid the entire conversation altogether, youâre inevitably going to have to talk about it during your job interview. Ace your interview by learning how to answer these four tough job interview questions about your layoff. Q: âWhy was your job eliminated?â By asking this question, your interviewer is getting right down to business. You canât just answer an off-handed, âI was laid off from my jobâ because without a doubt, your interviewer is going to want to know why. So tell him only what he needs to know- and no more. A: âI was laid off from my previous position due to budget cuts. Although I was saddened to leave a position I truly enjoyed for three years, I am proud of all the work I accomplished while working there.â Q: âHow many other people were laid off with you?â In this question, the recruiter might be trying to figure out if you were let go with a bunch of other employees- or if it was just you. If it was only you, he might assume that your layoff was more performance-based than due to financial reasons. A: âI was let go along with four other people from my department. Even though my boss fought to keep us, ultimately the company needed to decrease the amount of full-time salaried staffers, and we were not able to be kept on.â If you were the only one laid off, you can answer the question like this: A: âI was the only person let go this time, but there have been other layoffs in the previous months. I was assured that this layoff was not performance-based, and Iâd love to give you references from my former boss to attest to this.â Q: âWhat have you been doing since your layoff?â You donât want to admit that youâve been feeling a little blue since your layoff. Hiring managers are interested in understanding if youâve maintained your professional activity level since your layoff (and not been under the covers binge watching your favorite shows). So talk about what youâve been doing since your layoff. A: âIâve kept very busy since being laid off. Iâve: Volunteered Attended classes Earned X new skill Gone on informational interviews Freelanced or had contract work Helped at my childâs school Any one of these answers can show that youâve persevered, despite your layoff. They can count in your favor when a hiring manager or employer is determining how resilient you are after a layoff. Q: âWhat would your former boss say about you?â Again, a new employer might be trying to figure out if your layoff was something in or out of your ex-bossâ control. Reassure your interviewer that your layoff was due to no fault of your own. A: âIn my previous position, I received stellar performance reviews and got along well with my boss and colleagues. Although I was disappointed with the layoff, I know that it was out of my bossâ hands. I can give you references from him and others at my former company if you would like.â Tough job interview questions are a part of pretty much every job interview, but they can be even more difficult if youâre dealing with a layoff, too. Donât despair. Practice what you want to say ahead of time so that youâre prepared, and know that a layoff doesnât define you as a worker, or your ability to get hired in the future. 5 Successful People Who Started New Careers After 40
5 Successful People Who Started New Careers After 40 5 Successful People Who Started New Careers After 40 The phrase Its never too late to teach an old dog new tricks isnt just something that pertains to our canine friends. It can be applied to people as well. If there is one thing at which people are capable, it is the ability to adapt. Using that ability, we can take on challenges that at first glance or thought would seem impossible. Flexibility can be put to use in just about any phase of life, but it is especially effective when considering new careers after 40. Here are some great examples of getting started in a new career later in life. Ronald Reagan While most of us know Ronald Reagan from his time as president, he was also a fairly successful actor earlier in his life. He even served as president of the Screen Actors Guild. Reagan was 55 years old when he was elected to his first political office, becoming the Governor of California in 1966. Being the spokesman for General Electric, as well as an actor, might not seem like surefire ingredients for a two-term president, but it worked quite well in his case. Jack Cover Probably the least recognizable name on this list is Jack Cover. While his name might not jump out at you, chances are you know about his invention, the Taser. The early years of Covers life are impressive; he was a nuclear physicist and worked in the fields of defense and aerospace, even helping his agency become one of the major contributors to NASAs Apollo space program. While Cover was busy in his early avionics career, he followed the news closely. He was compelled by stories of hijackings and invented a non-lethal weapon that is now used in more than 13,000 police and military installations and by nearly 185,000 people globally. Cover was 50 when he began his new career and his new company, Taser, Inc. Grandma Moses Ana Mary Robertson, more commonly known as Grandma Moses, was definitely a late bloomer. For most of her life, she enjoyed working on her Virginia farm, selling potato chips and embroidering intricate pictures as a hobby. Advancing age and arthritis caused her to retire to her daughters home in her 80s, and it became difficult for her to hold embroidery needles without pain. Her sister suggested she try painting instead, and Robertson decided to channel her creative talents there. Good thing she picked up the paint brush because she became known as one of the greatest American folk artists, creating several well-known pieces of art and selling out art exhibitions around the country. Colonel Sanders While most people know the colonel as the head of Kentucky Fried Chicken, he also held many other jobs during his earlier life. After falsifying documents to join the United States Army at the age of 15, he went on to hold various other jobs including insurance salesman, firefighter for the railroad, steamboat pilot and even farmer. At the age of 40, he opened up a service station; he also cooked steaks, country ham and chicken dishes. With his reputation for good food growing, he moved to a 142-seat restaurant adjoining a motel, where he created the now-famous recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken. When the opening of a new interstate cut into his profits, he decided to take his show on the road and he started franchising KFC nationwide. Vera Wang Most people know Vera Wang as a famous fashion designer. Few people realize that Vera was once a talented figure skater, a career path that ended with her failure to make the U.S. Olympics team. She began a new career as an editor at Vogue magazine but was passed over for the position of editor-in-chief at the magazine. She then threw herself into her love of fashion. At the age of 40, she started designing wedding dresses and has become one of the most famous fashion designers of our time. Use these people as inspiration for considering a new career after 40. States where people pull the most all-nighters to stream TV
States where people pull the most all-nighters to stream TV States where people pull the most all-nighters to stream TV When you think about all the content out there you can stream it is actually overwhelming. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO GO, and now YouTube. Even SnapChat is getting into the original content streaming game with a new true crime series (though I am holding out for a War Peace adaptation featuring rainbow puke.) Now it is one thing to take the occasional weekend afternoon to binge a show (especially if a season premiere is coming or the weather is bad) but who is staying up until the wee hours of the morning and going into work super tired because they were streaming in bed? Tuck.com, a sleep data company, looked into it by surveying over 1,300 Americans to find out the ins and outs of streaming in bed.Believe it or not nearly half (45%) of adults have pulled an all-nighter in the last year to watch a TV show, with men being slightly more likely to do so than women (47% vs. 43%). The guiltiest age group is 25-34-year-olds, of whom just under 50% have stayed up all night to watch TV. However, all adults aged 54 and under are about equally willing to pull an all-nighter for streaming content. Older adults aged 55 and above appear to care more about sleep, with only about a quarter of that demographic giving up sleep for TV.See many people view binging as an actual sleep-aid. They keep it on as background noise as they drift off to sleep. However, this is not a good sleep. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that one-third of binge-viewers experience poor sleep. Likewise, 35.72% of our survey respondents felt that having access to streaming content contributed to them not getting enough sleep. Also have you ever fallen asleep to an episode of Westworld? Youâll never want to go to sleep again. As for which states have the most night owls for streaming TV, here is what they found. The 7 states most likely to have people pull an all-nighter to stream TV Arizona California Indiana Louisiana South Carolina Tennessee Texas As for who is actually using their bed for sleeping (or maybe other things) the survey found this. The 7 states least likely to pull an all-nighter to stream TV Kentucky Massachusetts Michigan Missouri Ohio Oregon Washington Wisconsin If you look at the map below it seems that people in the South are all about finishing Handmaidâs Tale in one night than their Northern counterparts. As for what kind of shows are keeping people up all night it is comedy for the win at 57.96% followed by action and adventure at 42.75% and then drama at 42.61% with documentaries in fourth place at 37.3%. Over 20% said they watch horror content all night. No wonder they canât sleep! So which shows are keeping them up all night? I mean if you are going to lose sleep over it, itâs gotta be at least Emmy-nominated.The TV shows keeping us up all night are ⦠Orange is the New Black 13 Reasons Why Stranger Things Breaking Bad Westworld Walking Dead Greyâs Anatomy Supernatural Handmaidâs Tale Criminal Minds OITNB and Stranger Things are no surprise considering their popularity and ubiquitous praise. 13 Reasons Why is also hit and clearly once you find out the first reason you want to spend your night finding out the other 12.People still love to see those darn doctors bed hopping and since Greyâs has been on for literally 95 seasons, itâs hard to run out of episodes. Same with Supernatural. Handmaidâs Tale is a provocative series as well as a critical darling and though no one can name a cast member of Criminal Minds it is still one of the most popular shows ever.

How to Prepare for a Case Interview
How to Prepare for a Case Interview How to Prepare for a Case Interview Have you been told that you have a case interview coming up? What is a case interview, anyway? A case interview is a job interview that includes questions about how to handle specific job scenario. During a case interview, the interviewee is given a business situation and asked what he or she would do to manage the situation. The business scenario is usually one that the interviewee would likely encounter while working for the company. However, the interviewer may also ask interview questions or ask you to solve brain teasers that donât relate directly to the company. These types of questions may leave you feeling a bit flustered, so take a deep breath and think your way through them. When Employers Use Case Interviews Used most often in management consulting and investment banking interviews, case interviews allow interviewees to demonstrate their analytical ability and problem-solving skills. Most case interview questions do not have one right answer â" there may be more than one acceptable way to manage the situation. For example, you may be asked how to determine how big the market might be for a new type of tennis ball. Thatâs not much information so youâd need to ask questions such as who the target consumer is â" professional tennis players or weekend tennis enthusiasts. Another question might be about how much the new tennis balls cost and how or where they are sold â" in stores or online. You could explain how youâd calculate the potential size of the market for this new tennis ball. In addition, perhaps you could offer ideas for expanding to additional consumers such as high school or college tennis players. The case interview doesnât have to be verbal only. You can draw up a few graphs, charts, or illustrations to help get your point across to the interviewer. One way to do this is to use an Issue Tree to outline and solve the problem. Remember that answering a case interview question like this really isnât about being right or wrong - the interviewer is more interested in how the applicant arrives at his or her solution. As such, a case interview is back and forth dialog. The interviewee is expected to interact with the interviewer and ask clarifying questions in a logical, sequential order to solve the given problem. Tips for Answering Case Interview Questions Your case interview may be less stressful if you have an idea of whatâs going to happen. Here are some tips for handling case interview questions: Understand the question. Paraphrase the question before answering to make sure you understand the problem. If youâre not clear on the question be sure to ask for more information. Be prepared to take notes. Most companies allow interviewees to take notes during the interview; if so, you should be prepared. Bring lined paper to the interview for notes and bring some graph paper as well, in case you need to draw any charts. Thereâs no need to rush. Take your time answering each question; logically think through the problem before arriving at a solution. Ask questions. Case interviews are interactive; feel comfortable asking your interviewer clarifying questions to gain more information. In fact, your interviewer will expect you to ask questions. Always explain how you arrived at a solution, even if you are simply estimating a number. Remember that how you arrived at your answer is generally more important than the answer itself. Stay professional. Although this is different from a traditional interview, itâs not the time to act too casually. Remain as professional as you would during a regular interview. Sit up straight, speak clearly, and make eye contact with the interviewer. Have fun! Interviewers want to see that you are enthusiastic about solving business problems. After all, these are the types of situations you will manage every day if youâre hired. Case Interview Practice Itâs very important to practice for a case interview, especially if this is your first one. Many universities and companies offer sample case questions on their website. Hunt for some of these case interview samples and use them to prepare yourself. Practice answering case interview questions in front of friends, family, or a career counselor. If youâre lucky, maybe you know someone who has experience with these types of interviews and is knowledgeable about your field. He or she might be able to help you create a mock interview. Itâs also a good idea to grab a stopwatch and time yourself. Most case interviews last 15 to 30 minutes. That may seem like a long time if youâre not ready, so whether you practice with another person, or just speak out loud in front of the mirror, the more you prepare now, the more comfortable youâll be at the real interview.

Should I Stay or Should I Go How to Determine If That New Job Is a Good Fit
Should I Stay or Should I Go How to Determine If That New Job Is a Good Fit Should I Stay or Should I Go How to Determine If That New Job Is a Good Fit Surfing the job boards one day, you come across an ad for what seems like the perfect role for you. You send in an application, and you hear back from the employer right away with a request for an interview. You go in for your first interview, which you ace, followed by a few more, which also go well. A week later, the phone rings. You got the job. You show up to work on your first day, eager to make a good impression. It goes well, but its not exactly what you thought it would be. Maybe tomorrow will be different, you tell yourself. You show up on day two, but its not. Neither is day three nor the rest of the week. Doubt creeps in. Should I have taken this job? Is this where I belong? Can I make the kind of impact I want to make here? you wonder to yourself. What to Do When Youre Not Satisfied at Work I work with people at all stages of their careers, including those who have started new jobs and are now questioning if the roles are right for them. When people are not sure about their employment situation, I usually offer them the following three choices: 1. Quit Complaining and Just Do the Job! This is not my favorite option, but it is an option. When we spend all our time complaining about how much we dislike something, we may be expending energy we could put toward appreciating that things good qualities. Surely not everything is bad about this position you have taken. After all, there was a reason you were initially interested in it. Jot down a list of pros and cons. You might be surprised to actually find you like some things about this job you think you completely hate. Maybe there is enough here to keep you engaged and productive for at least a bit longer, or maybe there is even enough that the job can become your career. 2. Do What You Can to Improve the Job or Environment Your Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) preferences might offer some insight here: A. Extraversion If you prefer extraversion, you are likely energized by work environments where you can interact with others. Not having opportunities to talk things out with others could leave you feeling drained by the end of a day. Tip: Try volunteering for a few projects that will allow for more interaction with your colleagues on a regular basis. Join or establish groups that offer opportunities to discuss ideas with others. B. Introversion If you prefer introversion, you likely enjoy work environments that provide some private space and reflection time. Having to constantly talk to other people throughout the day could leave you feeling exhausted and even a little testy at times. Tip: If your new job requires you to interact with others more than you would like, try getting up a littler earlier in the morning to get the time you need to process the coming day. Use your lunch break for a solitary walk or drive. If you need more reflection time, ask for it. You might be surprised by how supportive your colleagues and superiors are. C. Sensing If you prefer sensing, you probably like to get information in a sequential, step-by-step way when starting a new job. If you arent getting this kind of information, you may feel that too many of your questions are going unanswered. Tip: Dedicate time during your day to asking subject-matter experts for the specifics you need. Research resources to find answers that can help fill in the blanks. If no guidelines or manuals exists, be that person who volunteers to put them together. Note: Be careful not to step on anyone toes. You dont want to make people think you are looking down on their established processes. D. Intuition If you prefer intuition, you probably like to receive information in a big-picture-oriented way, instead of getting lots of details, when starting a new job. If you arent getting this kind of information, you may feel you dont have enough of a sense of general purpose to get things started. Tip: When all those details come at you at once, take a deep breath and put them into manageable chunks or patterns. These patterns can help you see what the ultimate outcome of your efforts could be, which should help you get started. E. Thinking If you prefer thinking, you likely need to address task-focused objective logic when making decisions in your new job. If your workplaces culture considers this approach too impersonal, you may feel as if you are being sidetracked from the most important tasks at hand. Tip: Stay focused on the logical outcomes while also considering that you need people to make things happen. You may want to set up calendar alerts to remind yourself to acknowledge the feelings and values of others. F. Feeling If you prefer feeling, you likely need to focus on values-centered people issues when making decisions in your new job. If your work environment doesnt appreciate the impact of decisions on people, you may feel you have chosen a workplace that does not value what is especially important to you. Tip: Remember to stay true to your values first and foremost while always recognizing that work is work and requires outcomes that produce results. G. Judging If you prefer judging, you probably need plans and schedules that you and others respect and follow when organizing work tasks. If your new work environment does not allow for this, you might start to feel anxious, worrying that projects wont be done on time. Tip: Ask yourself, Do I really need to get it done early, or can it wait just a bit? At the same time, also show clear evidence that the plans you have are realistic and will produce the best outcomes. H. Perceiving If you prefer perceiving, you probably need the flexibility to keep options open when organizing work tasks. If your new work environment does not allow for this, you might start to feel boxed in and pressured to make decisions you are not yet ready to make. Tip: The proof is in the pudding. If you can prove that your pressure-prompted approach can still result in excellent work that is always on time, those in your new work environment may be more willing to accept it. Still, most organizations run on judging principles, so you will probably need to think about flexing more than you might like. Reward yourself for flexing by making sure to keep your downtime more open-ended. 3. Leave! Really - just leave. Move on to find work you truly love in an environment that honors you for being the person you are. People often stay in work environments that dont appreciate what they contribute. This can lead to lower engagement, worse performance, and even lower self-esteem. We spend so much time at our jobs - why not find a place that appreciates our contributions the way we naturally present them? - I hope this article gives you a few ideas to consider if you find yourself questioning whether a new job is really right for you. I wish you all the best in your journey to find a work environment that honors and celebrates you for the work you do and the person you are. Michael Segovia is the lead trainer for The Myers-Briggs Companys MBTI Certification Programs. He recently presented a TED talk reflecting on how type theory has informed his understanding of his own life story.

What is a Resume
What is a Resume What is a Resume Its happened to each of us. Youre at a party, networking, on a date, or even at an interview. You extend your hand to meet a contact, excited about the possibilities associated with this new person- - and get a weak, listless handshake. Even if only for a split second, your attention shifts to the handshake and not the person behind it. A resume at its core is a document that lists your education and work experience. However, its also the equivalent of a strong handshake: In this age of applicant tracking systems, overwhelmed hiring managers, and hundreds of applications per position, its vital that your resume create a great first impression. So just what IS a resume in 2015? Lets start with what a resume isnt. A LinkedIn profile is now a necessary tool for any job seeker. As Alexandra Samuel of the Harvard Business Review puts it, a solid LinkedIn profile includes not only your self-proclaimed qualifications, but testimonials from colleagues, clients, and employers. Its easy to update, detailed, and shows off past work. Yet you still, as we believe and Forbes agrees, need a good resume in addition to your LinkedIn profile. If a resume is a handshake, a CV (curriculum vitae) is a full dating profile. This document is often used in applying for jobs internationally or in academia. Rather than focusing on specific employers and job titles, a CV details your professional and/or academic accomplishments and provides a venue for describing research endeavors, awards, and other notable details. Job seekers in the United States should definitely use a comprehensive career management document for their own records, but skip the storytelling seen in a CV (unless a CV is specifically called for). With that cleared up, lets examine what a resume really is: a set of opportunities. A well-written resume gives you the opportunity to: 1. Showcase crucial keywords. Including the correct keywords in your resume is the most important part of todays job search. Keywording not only serves the purpose of getting that resume past an applicant tracking system (ATS), but also helps show your attention to detail. Use Jobscans resume analysis tool to see how well your resume matches with an individual job description. And to keep the appropriate keywords front and center, tailor each resume you submit. Keywords unlock applicant tracking systems and lead to interviews. (Photo Credit: blog.vwriter.com) 2. Prove youre the best candidate. There are many reasons a person may need a job: making money, pursuing a passion, or perhaps gaining experience to bolster a degree. When an employer posts a job, it means they need something, too. Lisa Rangel, of Chameleon Resumes and Fast Company, says it bluntly but best: Simply put: nobody really cares what you want only. A resume is your way of showing how you, and not one of the other (sometimes hundreds!) applicants, will fully address the companys needs. Set yourself apart from the pack! 3. Own your career story. Although an employers keywords and proper resume format are important considerations, dont forget that your resume is just that- yours. Dont be shy about touting accomplishments (dont stretch the truth, of course). Using the resume as a vehicle for articulating the arc of your career will both show an employer what youve done and help you remember where youre headed. Dont submit a limp fish of a resume. Instead, see it as an opportunity to put forth a strong handshakeand start a career conversation.

Fictitious Business Name Statement
Fictitious Business Name Statement Fictitious Business Name Statement A simple definition of a fictitious name: A fictitious business name is one that does not use the business ownerâs name. If you are doing business under an assumed name, one different from your name, you need to file a âfictitious name statement.â This filing is required by law to connect the name of a business to the business owner. It protects consumers because it allows them to get information about the owner of a company if they have consumer problems or need to file a lawsuit. Example: Susan Jones starts a catering business and calls it âCatering Capers.â The business name is fictitious because she is doing business under an assumed name that does not identify her as the owner. Where to File Check with your county clerk, the city where you will obtain your business license or your Secretary of State to find out where you need to file to do business using a fictitious name. How Much It Costs The filing fee ranges from $10 to $100; however, you may also be required to post a statement of intent to use a fictitious name in a local newspaper before you can file the fictitious name statement. Be sure to check with your county clerk before running an ad â" there are often restrictions on what publications you can use, and you will be required to include very specific information in the ad statement. Once the statement of intent has been published in a newspaper (usually for several consecutive weeks) you will need to submit proof of the statement ad to the county clerk or other filing agency. Fictitious Business Name Restrictions Only businesses that have registered with the Secretary of State as a corporation (a separate filing process) can use the terms âcorporation,â incorporated,â or any abbreviations for these terms (i.e., âInc.â or âCorp.â) in a business name. If you are using a fictitious business name, most banks will not let you open a bank account until you have a business license or other proof that shows you have filed for a fictitious name. Exceptions to Filing Most states do not require a separate fictitious name filing for corporations unless the name under which the corporation will operate is different from the name under which the corporation is registered. Example: Bear Trackers, Inc. may not need to file a fictitious name statement because they are incorporated. However, if Bear Trackers, Inc. does business under another name like âBear Enterprisesâ they would have to file a fictitious name statement for the name that they are doing business under. Summary If you use a name other than your own to do business, you may have to file a fictitious business name statement (sometimes called âDoing Business Asâ or âDBAâ statement). Fictitious name statements are required for sole proprietorships and partnerships. Incorporated businesses may not need to file a fictitious name statement unless they are doing business under a name different from the corporationâs name. In most states, you need to file a fictitious name statement before you can get a business license or open a bank account.

An Overview of Appellate Law Practice
An Overview of Appellate Law Practice An Overview of Appellate Law Practice Are you trying to decide what kind of law you want to practice after law school? One type of law that is often overlooked or not thought of as a subtype of the legal profession is appellate law. If you like research and want to be an advocate as part of your legal career, then appellate law may be for you. Practice Description Although all cases are initially tried at the trial court level, the losing party may appeal his case to higher courts known as appellate courts. An appellate attorney concentrates his practice on advocating cases before state and federal appellate courts, including state supreme courts and the United States Supreme Court. Appellate attorneys seek to correct errors of trial court judges and change the law by persuading appellate courts to overturn lower court decisions or to expand or change the interpretation of statutory law. The challenging part of appellate law is that you start with a case that has already been unsuccessful once in the lower courts. Your job is to come from behind and earn something for your client, whether it is a new trial, the clientâs freedom, or something in between. Job Duties Appellate attorneys review and analyze trial records and other documents, research and analyze case law, draft persuasive briefs and appellate documents, advocate in appellate courts before appellate judges, and assist trial counsel in framing issues at trial and in preserving the record for appeal. What is important to remember about appellate attorneys is that they are never the first set of eyes on a case. In most cases, appellate attorneys are revisiting a case that occurred years before. Because of the unique nature of appellate law, research is done on a very regular basis, as appellate attorneys have to dig into the past to find new information regarding their cases. After being an appellate attorney for a certain number of years, there is always the potential to advance and become an appellate judge. To become an appellate judge, an appellate attorney generally must have at least a decade of experience practicing law. In some states, there may be a requirement that the person already has some experience as a judge, as well. Then, the prospective appellate judge must end up on a short list of the stateâs governorâs office. State governors recommend prospective appellate judges to the state bar association. Once appointed, appellate judges begin hearing cases in appellate court. Appellate judges also serve in the federal system, where they are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Education and Experience Appellate attorneys possess a J.D. and usually have significant trial experience. It may be helpful for the prospective appellate attorney to complete a summer associate position for an appellate attorney, or to clerk for an appellate judge. By doing that, you gain valuable experience in the unique practice of appellate law, and you learn whether or not appellate law is the right legal subfield for you. Skills Exceptional research, analytical, and writing skills are necessary to write concise and persuasive briefs, legal memoranda, and other documents. Other skills include broad and practical knowledge of numerous substantive areas of law, familiarity with appellate practice, excellent interpersonal skills, and superior oral advocacy skills. There are many upsides to working in appellate law. Appellate law sharpens research skills and hones a specific skill set for those who practice it- skills that may lead to becoming a judge one day. Donât discount this unique field of law when deciding the direction of your legal career.
